Sun Shield is a natural sun protection lotion (not a sunscreen) that soothes skin and protects against free radical damage at a cellular level. Organic, cold-pressed oils and butters are rich in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties, natural SPF, and are high in vitamins A, C, and E to soothe and protect your skin naturally.

We love the sun (and all the vitamin D it provides)…but we don’t love the skin damage excessive exposure can cause.  Traditional sunscreens contain potentially cancer-causing ingredients like avobenzene.  Safer options contain physical blockers, like zinc oxide.  Both help avoid burns, but also block vitamin D.

We decided to go for a new approach to skin health! Give Sun Shield a try!

Key Ingredients:

  • Olive Oil – SPF 3-5, soothes skin
  • Avocado Oil – SPF 15, anti-inflammatory
  • Raspberry Oil – SPF 25-50, phytosterols
  • Mango Butter – SPF 4, rich in vitamin A and antioxidants
  • Comfrey – repairs skin, antioxidant
  • Calendula – antioxidant, anti-inflammatory

ABSOLUTELY NO colors, flavors (natural or artificial), preservatives, added sugar, sodium benzoate, citric acid, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, top allergens (corn, soy, nuts, gluten, dairy, fish) or other junk!

Description

Sun Shield is a sun protectant lotion that provides a completely natural way of safeguarding your skin from sun damage. This lotion doesn’t absorb the sun’s rays or reflect them. Instead, it penetrates deeply into the skin to help protect against damage at the cellular level. Raspberry seed oil protects against UVA and UVB rays, while the oils and butters naturally have SPF ranging from 2 to 50 SPF each.

We use pure, plant-based oils infused with whole organic herbs that are rich in antioxidants. This formula nourishes your skin, blocks free radicals, all while protecting your skin from redness, wrinkles, and damage. Please keep in mind that Sun Shield is not an official sunscreen. Depending on your skin type, you may prefer to pair this with a mineral-based sunscreen for particularly hot or sunny days or you may find it to be enough protection on its own. Looking for an after-sun lotion? Try Sun-Soothe!

FAQs

Q: Is this a replacement for sunscreen? Is it a sunscreen?

A: Sun Shield is not a sunscreen.  Products must contain either a chemical blocker (like oxybenzene) or a physical blocker (like zinc oxide) to legally be considered a sunscreen.  Instead, Sun Shield uses plant oils and herbs that have a natural SPF and protect skin on a cellular level.  Some people use it instead of a traditional sunscreen and some people use it along with a traditional sunscreen.

Q: What is the SPF of Sun Shield?

A: Because it is not legally a sunscreen, it doesn’t have an official SPF rating.  However, based on the SPF of each plant oil in it, we estimate a level of 12 – 15.

Q: This is just a bunch of oils…isn’t that like cooking yourself in the sun?

A: No.  Our skin naturally protects itself with oils!  This will penetrate your skin to protect your skin at a cellular level.  It will not make you ‘cook’ in the sun.

Q: Some of these oils are seed oils! I thought we were never supposed to use those? Won’t they become toxic when exposed to sun?

A: It’s best to avoid seed oils that have been heated to high temperatures, like when frying food, because they do become denatured and potentially toxic then.  However, small amounts of raw, cold-pressed seed oils are fine, especially topically.  The heat level at which these oils become denatured is at least 300 degrees F (which is fairly cool for cooking, but much higher than they would ever get on your skin).  You’re safe here!

Q: Is Sun Shield strong enough for ________?

A: It varies greatly.  Some people who are very fair can use it exclusively in strong sunlight and not burn.  Others may burn even in moderate sunlight.  It depends on genetics, tendency to burn, strength of sun, time of year, and even diet.  A person who consumes an anti-inflammatory diet will be less likely to burn and experience more success with Sun Shield than those who eat more sugar, vegetable oils, and white flour.  (Yes, really!)

Q: What if Sun Shield doesn’t work for me?

A: Like anything else, Sun Shield doesn’t work for 100% of people.  We recommend trying it out during shorter sun exposure first (rather than a long day at the beach).  If it doesn’t work, we have a money-back guarantee — just let us know.

I have fair skin sensitive skin and burn easily. I’ve used this a handful of times on myself and my children and no burns so far! I’ve not really tested it for long term usage or in wet situations such as the pool, but I’m very happy with the results. My only complaint with it is the fact that it’s very messy and the bottle leaks. I have to keep in mine in a plastic baggy at all times. I will repurchase again though.

I haven’t tried this yet for sun, so I can’t rate it on sun protection. However, I love it as a moisturizer. My skin is very sensitive so I’m limited in what products I can use. I also need to rotate products. Sun Shield and Soothing Skin Balm are the two products that help my skin the most.

We have both the stick & the bottle of Sun Shield! Let me start off with the good, it works really well! We loved the idea of the stick, because it was easy to apply and I thought it would be better for our kiddos. Unfortunately, my oldest has sensory processing and this is super sticky! It makes you feel real greasy too, so my daughter and i ended up not using it. My husband and younger daughter used it while we were all at Disney and it worked real well for them! And if you know the Florida sun, then you know this is a good sun shield! But older daughter and i couldn’t stand the feeling. :/

I don’t want to leave a bad review because I love the other products I’ve tried and I love what you all do, but I’m just going to be honest here.
I bought two bottles right from the start because I was so excited to use this sun block on my kiddo. It came out so greasy and the smell was not pleasant. I put it on anyway because well if it works, it will be worth it but it didn’t work on me or my kiddo. And that’s living in Minnesota at the time, not a southern state that it didn’t work. When we moved to Arizona, I didn’t dare try using it in Phoenix. Plus it stained our clothes that we were wearing when we had it on and you can’t get oil greasy stains out of clothes easily or at all. So now I am stuck with 2 bottles I will never use. Once again out of the 10 or so products from Earthly, this is the only one I haven’t enjoyed, the rest have been 5 stars for sure!!

I ordered the Sun Shield a couple month ago and have used it a few times (the weather where I live is not hot and sunny yet.) I like the Sun Sheild as I feel it really nourishes my skin. It is on the oily side, but for someone who uses coconut oil regularly in the sun as I do, it’s right up my alley. My skin tone remained the same and I did not experience discoloration or the rash I sometimes get from sun exposure. I did not give it 5 Stars as I need to try it out on a full-blown summer day on the beach or outdoors to really know how much I like it. But thus far, I am hopeful.

  6. Sharon Arnold (verified owner)

I like the Sun Shield and how it worked. I really didn’t like the smell much though.

Sun Shield is AMAZING. To switch from sunscreen whose bottle has an SPF on it to one with no SPF may be daunting at first. Don’t worry though. SPF is essentially a made up concept ;). This chemical free (LOVE!!!!!!) sunscreen kept my very fair skin from burning despite me being on the beach for hours. You will need to reapply a few times if you’re out all day, but instead of burning like I always do, I was able to lay out AND get a tan!!! The formula is oily but absorbs fairly quickly. I would recommend this to everyone! I’ll never use another sunscreen again! Thank you, Earthley!

I love sun shield! I love that the ingredients are simple, and I don’t have to worry about what I’m putting on my kid’s skin! Has kept us from burning, but we also use hats and clothes to help with sun too. So glad I have something to put on our skin that I don’t have to worry about giving us cancer!

  9. Mindi (verified owner)

Sun Shield is the only thing we use! It truly works and is not oily at all. It soaks in the skin and shields the sun Ray’s. We have a pool and use it daily 2 times a day and no one gets burnt. It’s awesome! We also go to the ocean every year and only take Sun Shield! Works good in Ohio weather as well as Florida weather too!

So excited to start using this again for summer! I used it last year and my son and I never got burned! Love that its not shielding the sun away and causing my body harm with other chemicals! Ive even noticed that I got tanner while using this and if i did get a bit to much sun, by the next day it was healed. I wont use anything else but this! Totally love it! And highly recommend!

I was skeptical on this one but I was wanting so badly to find a product not laden with chemicals so I threw caution to wind and ordered. I am thrilled with the results! I burn fairly easy. I’m not super fair-skinned but I’m definitely one who needs to be careful as I don’t spend a lot of time in the sun so when I do I usually feel it. I used this sunscreen on arms, shoulders and neck while out doing yard work for several hours. No burn at all. I must say I’ve not used it beachside yet. It is a bit oily but I’ll take that any day over store-bought toxic products. I’m happy with Sun Shield and have ordered more than once. I would love if it had a bit of a scent though, say coconut or Shea butter. I know many essential oils make you sensitive to the sun so maybe there are not a lot of options for scenting this lotion. I still love it and will continue to buy it as long as it is offered. Earthley is a great company to work with. They are prompt in answering questions via their chat option. And wait time for shipping is pretty quick as well. I have been more than satisfied with all the Earthley products I have tried thus far. I just ordered a new one, Vitamin C powder, last night and can’t wait for it to arrive.

Really enjoy having this! Its lasted me 2 summers so far with some leftover. It is a little greasy but for me not in a bad way. I love how it feel so nourishing to my skin. This summer I barley got sunburned. And the little bit that I did it was gone by the next day. Wanst even bad. I do have to reaply it about every two hours. But I dont worry If I forget because I know that this will help repair any damage. I also have noticed that it promotes a great tan! I use it on my toddler and he has never gotten burned.

  13. Rebecca Joslin (verified owner)

Love this stuff! I was on the beach for 4 days and did not get red at all as long as I stayed on top of applying this! Will for sure buy again!

  14. Halka Liss (verified owner)

I must say the first time of using this product I did get pink and burn a little, but after adding a little more of red raspberry seed oil it works perfect. We all have amazing tans and no burns after few days in the sun. Also i am in love with the way it feels and how it applies, so hydrating. You definitely need to reapply often, especially if you are fair skinned and burn easily, but other then that i highly recommend this.

  15. Molly (verified owner)

I had written a review earlier about the product before I used it describing the smell. We used it at the beach, and my husband who has a tan complexion never had such a horrible burn. It seemed more like tanning oil. He was in the water the most and had reapplied it once over the course of 5 hours. In the past when he had not used sunblock, he had never got this bad of a burn. He has dark sun spots all over his back because of this burn. My kids and I also got burnt too but were not in the sun as long. I know now on their website they are saying it is not a sunscreen, but I don’t think it was there last summer when I received the product or I wouldn’t have used it at the beach. I think they probably wrote it not being a sunscreen after a private email I sent to them asking for a refund, which I didn’t get. I really love Earthley products, but I am so disappointed in this one. So don’t use this as a sunscreen!! With olive oil being one of the main ingredients how can it not be like a tanning oil?

  16. Brittany Greco (verified owner)

Works well on my baby when we go to the beach (Northern CA) a bit greasy, and we still kept him in the shade as much as possible. I burnt to high heaven, but did not use any as we only had a sample. We keep the rest of the sample in the diaper bag for just-in-case.

  17. Tanielle (verified owner)

It’s amazing how well it works. We went to the zoo and the only one who got burned was my husband who forgot to apply it on the back of his neck and shoulders. Everywhere he had put it on was fine and everyone else was too. It’s not greasy like conventional sunscreen and it’s extremely moisturizing too.

  18. DRM (verified owner)

This is a so-so product. It goes on pretty oily or greasy. You’ll definitely know you have it on, and you will feel that it is on you because it is oily. However, the hot Central Texas Sun might be too strong for this stuff because I have gotten pink after using it. And it’s hard to know when to reapply because it feels so oily, and I feel it even after having it on for a while.

  19. Ashley (verified owner)

For our verrry fair family, this combined with a general attempt to stay out of direct sunlight during the “heat of the day” 11a-4p worked well for us last summer. We also used it at the beach in the fall. I’m not sure how it would do for an all-day waterpark type excursion, I might would want to use non-nano zinc type natural sun-block for something like that. But, I love the idea behind this, the fact that we NEED to get sunlight, so we don’t just wanna block it all time. For the great majority of summer days, we will use this. Only for a special theme park / water park day when it’s all day and it’s unavoidable to get heat of the day sun would I think of buying a different type of sun BLOCK.

  20. Lori Gotelli (verified owner)

The first time I used this, I put it on my two toddlers and my very fair skinned grandson. We were at the beach for the weekend and no one burned! It worked.
I forgot my night face moisturizer so I used this instead.
I love it and we’ll keep using it.
