Sun Shield – To Protect Skin from Sun on a Cellular Level

Sun Shield is a natural sun protection lotion (not a sunscreen) that soothes skin and protects against free radical damage at a cellular level. Organic, cold-pressed oils and butters are rich in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties, natural SPF, and are high in vitamins A, C, and E to soothe and protect your skin naturally.

We love the sun (and all the vitamin D it provides)…but we don’t love the skin damage excessive exposure can cause.  Traditional sunscreens contain potentially cancer-causing ingredients like avobenzene.  Safer options contain physical blockers, like zinc oxide.  Both help avoid burns, but also block vitamin D.

We decided to go for a new approach to skin health! Give Sun Shield a try!

Key Ingredients:

  • Olive Oil – SPF 3-5, soothes skin
  • Avocado Oil – SPF 15, anti-inflammatory
  • Raspberry Oil – SPF 25-50, phytosterols
  • Mango Butter – SPF 4, rich in vitamin A and antioxidants
  • Comfrey – repairs skin, antioxidant
  • Calendula – antioxidant, anti-inflammatory

ABSOLUTELY NO colors, flavors (natural or artificial), preservatives, added sugar, sodium benzoate, citric acid, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, top allergens (corn, soy, nuts, gluten, dairy, fish) or other junk!

Description

Sun Shield is a sun protectant lotion that provides a completely natural way of safeguarding your skin from sun damage. This lotion doesn’t absorb the sun’s rays or reflect them. Instead, it penetrates deeply into the skin to help protect against damage at the cellular level. Raspberry seed oil protects against UVA and UVB rays, while the oils and butters naturally have SPF ranging from 2 to 50 SPF each.

We use pure, plant-based oils infused with whole organic herbs that are rich in antioxidants. This formula nourishes your skin, blocks free radicals, all while protecting your skin from redness, wrinkles, and damage. Please keep in mind that Sun Shield is not an official sunscreen. Depending on your skin type, you may prefer to pair this with a mineral-based sunscreen for particularly hot or sunny days or you may find it to be enough protection on its own. Looking for an after-sun lotion? Try Sun-Soothe!

FAQs

Q: Is this a replacement for sunscreen? Is it a sunscreen?

A: Sun Shield is not a sunscreen.  Products must contain either a chemical blocker (like oxybenzene) or a physical blocker (like zinc oxide) to legally be considered a sunscreen.  Instead, Sun Shield uses plant oils and herbs that have a natural SPF and protect skin on a cellular level.  Some people use it instead of a traditional sunscreen and some people use it along with a traditional sunscreen.

Q: What is the SPF of Sun Shield?

A: Because it is not legally a sunscreen, it doesn’t have an official SPF rating.  However, based on the SPF of each plant oil in it, we estimate a level of 12 – 15.

Q: This is just a bunch of oils…isn’t that like cooking yourself in the sun?

A: No.  Our skin naturally protects itself with oils!  This will penetrate your skin to protect your skin at a cellular level.  It will not make you ‘cook’ in the sun.

Q: Some of these oils are seed oils! I thought we were never supposed to use those? Won’t they become toxic when exposed to sun?

A: It’s best to avoid seed oils that have been heated to high temperatures, like when frying food, because they do become denatured and potentially toxic then.  However, small amounts of raw, cold-pressed seed oils are fine, especially topically.  The heat level at which these oils become denatured is at least 300 degrees F (which is fairly cool for cooking, but much higher than they would ever get on your skin).  You’re safe here!

Q: Is Sun Shield strong enough for ________?

A: It varies greatly.  Some people who are very fair can use it exclusively in strong sunlight and not burn.  Others may burn even in moderate sunlight.  It depends on genetics, tendency to burn, strength of sun, time of year, and even diet.  A person who consumes an anti-inflammatory diet will be less likely to burn and experience more success with Sun Shield than those who eat more sugar, vegetable oils, and white flour.  (Yes, really!)

Q: What if Sun Shield doesn’t work for me?

A: Like anything else, Sun Shield doesn’t work for 100% of people.  We recommend trying it out during shorter sun exposure first (rather than a long day at the beach).  If it doesn’t work, we have a money-back guarantee — just let us know.

This stuff is awesome!!! We mixed it with our mineral sunscreen at the beach(our whole family burns easily), and this is the first year none of us burned! Thank you Earthley!

The first time I used sun shield was on mid-spring walk and was out for a little over an hour, in and out of shade. My neck was burnt. Today, I tried it again at the pool on my whole body and husband’s upper half. We both got pretty bad burns on our faces, backs, shoulders, and necks. My thighs burned as well. I even reapplied after two hours and I always wait the 15 mins before sun exposure. I’m glad I didn’t put it on the kids’ faces, just their legs and they didn’t burn. I’ll be going back to the stuff that keeps us from burning. We have a lot more summer left and I’m not going to spend it burnt! With that said, this is the only product from Earthley that I’ve been disappointed in.

I think you need to understand the tan level of your skin, the general spf of this product, and the intensity of the sun before using it. It is not your 50 level spf toxic sun block. Having said that, it did offer me some amazing protection and LOVED the way my skin felt afterwards while on the beach. I don’t fry myself in the sun for hours though. I was still using caution with this, aware of parts of me that had less sun they may have been burning. Anyway, I love it so much as a moisturizer I put it in my bathroom to use out of the shower this summer as well.

  4. Mara (verified owner)

I really hoped this would work. My husband is very sensitive to ingredients so we were super excited to try this out. He works in the sun for 8-9 hours a day, and is very diligent in applying this every 45 minutes. He still burns very very badly with this. With that, the after sun cream is nice. But we will have to look elsewhere for sun protection.

  5. SJ (verified owner)

I love this product! It seems greasy at first, but that doesn’t last. It feels great on my skin and is perfect for shorter amounts of sun exposure. I ordered some for a friend and she loves it too!

  6. Jessica Eske (verified owner)

I wanted to love this sunscreen because I love everything else from this company. I applied this sunscreen exactly like it instructed its users to do and I ended up having the worst sun burns of my adult life. The UV ray Index said 7; perhaps if it was used on a lower UV Ray day?

  7. Autumn Gibson (verified owner)

I really love how this product feels on the skin and it is easy to apply, but it did not keep me and my husband from getting sunburnt. We got burnt bad. I was really wanting to like it since I like my other Earthley products. I even bought 2 bottles of this product thinking it would work well for us.

  8. Muriah Cockrell

We sunburned bad. I don’t recommend this product.

  9. Marissa H. (verified owner)

I love this product! I never thought I would be able to use a product that is so oil-based and not fry in the sun. I usually use 15-30SFP in Florida. I always have to develop a “base coat” using a higher SPF. When I used this, I did not have to use any traditional sunscreen to supplement it. I ended up with the most even tan of my life and tanned faster, even with less total time in the sun. I would recommend making sure you do re-apply every 2-3 hours. If you don’t and end up getting more red than you like, I highly recommend following up with the Sun Soothe lotion. It took out all redness and I had no peeling. The Sun Shield is pretty runny, so just a heads up when you start to apply. I also used this on my 6 month old baby who is fair-skinned. Although we did keep her mostly covered with a hat/long-sleeved bathing suit or in the shade, I was impressed that this appeared to work for her too. She had no redness.

This is the only sun screen my kids have ever used and ever needed. We spend a lot of time outside in the summer and I’ve never needed to use anything else (or wanted to). I rarely need it for myself, but I have used it and it does help to keep the sunburn away if you’re in really intense heat and sun. It is definitely oily, and I’d prefer more of a “Lotion” whipped body butter type feel, but this works nicely.

  11. Kaylie (verified owner)

This definitely helped hold off a sun burn, needs to be reapplied often. I didn’t like the smell but it came melted in the summer to I added some essential oils to it. I still am not a fan or how liquify and oily this is. Most of my summer clothes are white and this would probably stain.

  12. Lindsay DeYoung (verified owner)

My absolute favorite sun product. I wasn’t expecting it to be as effective as it is. I typically use a formula that’s similar, but with zinc. This was just as effective, and I didn’t have to fight to get it off later like I do with the zinc. It’s moisturizing and easy to put on, and actually protects my fair skin. Love this stuff.

  13. Nevada (verified owner)

I absolutely love this stuff! I got the stick and put it in the diaper bag and hiking backpack. Super easy to use and you still get all the benefits of the sun!

  14. Leilani (verified owner)

I like the idea of this product protecting the skin naturally from the effects of the sun. It’s a pretty heavy oil-based texture though , that made us feel pretty sticky in the summer heat, so we didn’t end up using it much. I did purchase the stick for spot treating and I liked that much better.

  15. Tami Dolan

I was skeptical of the sun shield but at the same time I wanted to be rid of the scary chemicals found in commercial products so I gave Earthly a try. I was surprised that it really worked! I am fair skinned and burn fairly quickly. Sun Shield allows me to remain in the sun longer and it doesn’t sweat or wash right off. It’s not technically water proof but it’s made with a silky oil that makes your skin feel so moisturized and supple. We even took it to Jamaica where the sun shines more fierce and as long as I stayed on top of applications I was well protected. That really impressed me!

This is all I used on my 1 year old this summer. He never got burned, but I did notice if we used it multiple days in a row (even with a bath after using) he seemed to break out just a little, as if it clogged some pores on his face and legs. But we just try not to use it multiple days in a row if we can help it. Other than that we like this sun shield! Plus you still get you lr vitamin D

  17. Rebecca Ayers (verified owner)

The main difference I noticed with using this is that the areas where we tend to “burn” a little don’t stay red and don’t turn painful. I never used this by itself when we were going to be in direct sun for hours, since it’s not a sunscreen. But I love the smell of it, and I love having protection at a cellular level and something that’s good for our skin!

  18. Lauren Osta (verified owner)

This prevented my fair skinned toddler from getting burned while we were at the beach. That being said, I think that I may have gotten a bad batch because my tube had a bunch of granular particles that looked like sand. It almost looked like an exfoliant. I wasn’t pleased with the texture, but it was effective. It’s also very moisturizing for dry skin.

  19. Jordan Long

The face stick is ok & I didn’t get that super hot with that on, but the larger size I used made me feel like I was wrapped in a hot wrap. I will continue to purchase the stick!

  20. lindseyhickman1229

I used this on the area that gets most burnt, my nose and cheeks, and after a few hours in the sun I still was a little pink but within hours it faded into a nice tan. No red hot painful burns like I’m used to! I also use it on my 6 month old’s arms and it works great for him- no pink!
