The Problem with Mainstream Skincare
Mainstream skincare has some seriously dangerous ingredients. Let’s take a look.
- Aluminum – Heavy metals in your skincare? No thanks. Read more: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30315446/
- Parabens – Stay away! They can have an impact on hormones and even increase the risk of cancer. Read more: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30517665/, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34144080/, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31918794/
- Phthalates – You definitely don’t want them. They are endocrine and reproductive disrupters. Read more: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17889607/
- Fragrance – A HIGHLY toxic ingredient that should be avoided at all costs! It can cause health risks like neurotoxicity and so much more. Read more: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31041411/, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27752443/, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28683407/
- Sulfates – Pass! They are detergents that make products lather and bubble, but they don’t come without risk either and can be very toxic. Read more: http://www.ilo.org/dyn/icsc/showcard.display?p_lang=en&p_card_id=0502
- … and literally so much more.
The bottom line is that mainstream skincare is unregulated. Just because a product is on the market, doesn’t mean it’s safe or even beneficial to you at all. Companies are using dangerous ingredients, often disguising or not disclosing them at all. They, unfortunately, do not have your health in mind.
What About Water in Skincare?
Water is a main ingredient in most skincare items, but not Earthley’s. Why?
Water sounds harmless enough, but the problem is, it doesn’t add any benefits to skincare and actually has some drawbacks. Adding water to skin care dilutes it and causes you to pay more money for something that isn’t beneficial. Also, your skin is supposed to produce natural oils to keep it hydrated. Using a bunch of water can actually dry out your skin over time, causing you to use more product… and more wasted money. Not to mention, if you use water in skin care, then you have to add preservatives, synthetic emulsifiers, and other chemicals… and those things aren’t benefiting your skin, either. (Quite the opposite.)
What About Oil?
You might’ve heard that oil is bad from your skin and that you need to shop oil-free products.
It seems like adding extra oil would cause breakouts, but that’s only if you add the wrong oils. Our skin produces its own oil, which is how it stays soft and supple. When there’s a breakdown in proper oil production, then we can see breakouts.
The goal is to fix that improper oil production… and water-based skincare just doesn’t cut it.
Can Oils Really Help My Skin?
The right oils can! But how can you tell?
You’ll want to consider the oil’s fatty acid profile, comedogenic rating, and benefits to the skin.
Every oil has a comedogenic rating from 0 – 5. A rating of 0 means it’s been shown to never clog pores. A rating of 5 means it almost always clogs pores. It’s important to choose oils that rate 0 – 2 whenever possible.
Every oil also has a unique fatty acid profile. There are several different fatty acids — linoleic, oleic, stearic, palmitic, and more. Those first two are found in unsaturated/liquid oils, while the latter two are found in saturated/hard oils. Some skin types need more of one fatty acid than another.
For example, oils that are high in linoleic acid and 0 – 1 on the comedogenic scale won’t clog pores and are excellent for acne-prone skin. Most people don’t know this, so they don’t consider it when formulating. It’s why some products intended for acne-prone skin actually cause breakouts for some people! At Earthley, we understand the chemistry of the natural oils and choose the best ones for different skin types.
While formulating, we also consider the additional properties that make oils beneficial to skin in certain ways. An oil may help fight acne, be deeply nourishing, help reduce redness, and more.
The Earthley Difference
In our skincare line, we use only ingredients that are truly beneficial. You’ll never find harmful toxins, useless water, or skin-clogging oils in our products. Our botanical skincare line uses 100% natural ingredients that are just right for your skin. It’s our passion to make high-quality products accessible to all so you can finally enjoy luxurious skincare without the premium price. At Earthley, we always keep your health in mind and carefully formulate each product to be truly beneficial to you!
Step 1: Cleanse
Most cleansers are liquid detergents that completely strip skin of their natural oils. Instead, we use true soaps, which are super-fatted with nourishing oils to prevent dryness and are gentle to your skin. They have a pH of around 9, which gently disrupts your skin’s acid mantle and breaks up oils and dirt to truly clean your skin. They’ll even remove makeup properly, with no need for a separate “makeup remover” product.
Which to Choose?
Our Charcoal Facial Bar is the perfect for gently cleansing the skin, especially if you have oily or acne-prone skin. (If you have dry skin, you may prefer to try our 3-in-1 Soap (not included in the sale). If you’re looking for an exfoliating face wash that smells amazing and will reveal glowing skin, try our Exfoliating Cleanser!
Step 1.5: Exfoliate and Mask
It’s always good to exfoliate your skin once or twice a week to remove rough, dead skin and reveal the glowing skin beneath it. And who doesn’t love a spa night with a luxury face mask?
Which to Choose?
Masks are a great way to pamper yourself and treat your skin! Feed your skin’s microbiome and enjoy glowing, even-toned skin with our Prebiotic Mask. If you have acne-prone skin that needs a good detox, try our Lavender Green Clay Mask.
Step 2: Tone
Even out your skin tone and shrink the appearance of pores with our all-natural, Tone Me! Pure, clean, and organic ingredients combine to clean off any leftover dirt or oil and even out your skin’s pH. After washing your face, cleanse and close your pores before moisturizing for balanced, smooth skin.
Step 3: Moisturize
As we mentioned above, yes, we use oils — and only oils — in our moisturizers! We formulated very carefully with oils that are beneficial to different skin types.
Which to Choose?
Those with normal to oily or acne-prone skin will do best with our Oily formulation. It’s rich in linoleic acid, which those with acne usually don’t have enough of. The fatty acids balance your skin’s natural oil production, which helps to reduce breakouts and keep pores clear.
For those with dry skin, try our Dry formula. It’s more balance in its fatty acid profile (between oleic and linoleic) and more nourishing as well.
Step 3.5: Spot Treatment
Heal breakouts, relieve pain from deep-down acne, and nourish your skin with our botanical essential oil roller. No more drying out your skin with spot treatments that are full of acids and oxides! Instead, rosehip seed oil and essential oils combine to fight acne-causing bacteria and soothe inflamed skin.
Step 4: Serum
All of our skincare is high-quality, but our serums really take it over the edge for a truly luxury experience. Healing herbs and nourishing oils combine to create three different serums that your skin will love.
Which to Choose?
For acne-prone, scarred, or damaged skin, try Deep Healing Skin Serum. For skin with fine lines and wrinkles, try Rejuvenate Me! for it’s anti-aging benefits. Tired eyes with dark circles, fine lines, and bags will love our Eye Serum!
