Introducing: The Green Family!

Have you ever wished that your family’s alternative and more natural lifestyle choices could be supported in children’s literature? We have too, and that’s why our CEO and founder of Earthley, Kate Tietje, wrote the Green Family book series!

Kate has over 10 years of experience as an herbalist, doesn’t use over-the-counter drugs when her kids are sick, and has had FIVE homebirths! She noticed that the choices her family made were not represented in a way that helps children understand or makes them feel like they belong and she decided to do something about it!

In this series you’ll find out what the Green Family does when they get sick, how they forage for wild plants and herbs, what they do when they go to their homeschool co-op, and how Mama Green handles childbirth naturally by visiting a midwife.

If you homeschool, use herbal tinctures, make food from scratch, home birth, forage, or more, this series is perfect for your family to read together! Read more about each book below!

Book 4: The Green Family Visits the Midwife

The Green Family adventures are fun and relatable for real families who are trying to do their best to make healthier, natural choices. While most children’s books normalize the mainstream path (schools, doctor’s visits, etc.), The Green Family normalizes a totally different, all-natural lifestyle — one that is becoming ever more popular.

In The Green Family Visits the Midwife, join Mama and the family as they make an exciting announcement — they’re expecting a new baby! Mama takes the Green children with her to visit the midwife, where they get to see how Mama and baby are doing and ask questions as they prepare for a home birth.

Sneak peak of the story:

“How will we plan for the baby?” Axel asked. “What do we need to do to get ready?”“Not much,” Mama Green replied. “The baby will sleep with me and Papa at first, so we don’t need to set up a bed. We’ll have to get out the baby clothes and cloth diapers and wash them, but not for a few months yet. One thing we will do is go and visit the midwife!”

“What’s a midwife?” River asked.

“A midwife is a woman who takes care of me while the baby is in my tummy, and who comes to help me when it’s time for the baby to be born,” Mama Green explained. “She asks me lots of questions about how I’m feeling, and she checks on the baby.”

“How does she do that, Mama?” Violet asked.

“She uses some special tools. It will be easier to show you – and we will on Monday, when we go to visit the midwife!”The children were excited. They wanted to go with Mama Green to the midwife to learn more about the coming baby!

Book 3: The Green Family Goes to Homeschool Co-op

Meet The Green Family: Mama, Papa, Axel (10), Violet (8), River (6), and Soleil (3). They’re a Midwestern, homesteading family living their best life — as naturally as they can.

In the third book of the Green Family series, The Green Family Goes to Co-op, it is a rainy day, but that doesn’t keep the Green family cooped up inside. The Green family is not going to let a little rain stop them from enjoying their favorite day of the week – homeschool co-op day! This story shines some light on how homeschool co-ops bring communities together for learning and fun. So, come join Axel, Violet, River, and little Soleil as they enjoy their day at co-op with Mama and Papa.

Sneak peek of the story:

“‘Let’s get started!’ Mrs. Shannon clapped her hands. ‘Welcome to messy science! In this class, we’re going to do a new project or experiment every week. We will get messy!’”

“Before long, co-op was over. ‘Come on,’ Mama said. ‘It’s time to go home!’ All the children waved good-bye to their new friends – and Violet hugged Arielle – before they piled back into their car to head home for rest and family homeschool time. ‘ Homeschool co-op is my favorite day!’ River declared. ‘We get to learn all the coolest things!’ Mama smiled. ‘I bet you can’t wait to go back next week!’”

Find out why the Green family loves co-op so much, and stay tuned for more titles to come!

Book 2: The Green Family Goes Wildcrafting

It’s called The Green Family Goes Wildcrafting, and it’s all about the beauty — and health benefits! — of spring herbs.

As Mama Green is preparing a healthy breakfast, the Green children look out the window to see an amazing sight — it’s dandelion season!  They head outside with their herb-gathering baskets, and begin picking dandelions, violets (which Violet loves!), and many more spring herbs.  Mama shares the benefits of these herbs with them as they pick.  After, they come inside and make some amazing treats with their flowers.  The recipes for these treats are included in the book, so you can try them too!

Sneak peek of the story:

“Ooh, look at these pretty purple flowers!” Violet bent over. The flowers were tiny, with four petals. They were surrounded by curled, heart-shaped leaves. “What are they?”

“Those, my dear, are violets!” Mama said.

Violet’s eyes widened. “Violets…like me!” she exclaimed.

“That’s right,” Mama told her. “You can pick them, if you like. We can make violet jelly! Violets are tasty, and they’re rich in vitamin C.”

Violet began to gather the purple flowers into her basket.

Book 1: The Green Family Gets the Sniffles

Meet The Green Family: Mama, Papa, Axel (10), Violet (8), River (6), and Soleil (3).  They’re a mid-western, homesteading family living their best life — as naturally as they can.

In their first adventure, The Green Family Gets the Sniffles, Violet wakes up with a cold on a day they’re supposed to head to the town’s ice festival.  Papa takes the healthy kids off for an adventure, while Mama stays behind to take care of poor Violet.

But Mama knows just what to do!  She gives Violet her homemade elderberry syrup, makes a pot of chicken soup, and prepares hot ginger tea.  Soon, Violet is feeling better — and Mama’s prepared when Axel wakes up later with a sniffle, too!

The Green Family adventures are fun and relatable for real families who are trying to do their best to make healthier, natural choices.  While most children’s books normalize the mainstream path (schools, doctor’s visits, etc.), The Green Family normalizes a totally different lifestyle — one that is becoming ever more popular.

The story is beautifully illustrated, and comes with discussion questions and recipes for elderberry syrup, ginger tea, and chicken soup, so you can try them out with your own family!

Sneak peek of the story:

Mama Green smiled at Violet and headed into the kitchen.  She got out the ingredients for soup: onions, carrots, celery, garlic, bone broth, bay leaves, parsley, sage, chicken, and turmeric.  She chopped and mixed and simmered until the soup was golden and smelled delicious.

Violet came wandering out of her room.  “I smelled the soup and I want to have some!”

“Of course,” Mama Green said, as she reached for a bowl and a spoon.  She ladled some steaming soup into Violet’s bowl, then carried it across their bright, rustic kitchen and set it down in front of her at the table.
