Sun Shield – To Protect Skin from Sun on a Cellular Level

Sun Shield is a natural sun protection lotion (not a sunscreen) that soothes skin and protects against free radical damage at a cellular level. Organic, cold-pressed oils and butters are rich in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties, natural SPF, and are high in vitamins A, C, and E to soothe and protect your skin naturally.

We love the sun (and all the vitamin D it provides)…but we don’t love the skin damage excessive exposure can cause.  Traditional sunscreens contain potentially cancer-causing ingredients like avobenzene.  Safer options contain physical blockers, like zinc oxide.  Both help avoid burns, but also block vitamin D.

We decided to go for a new approach to skin health! Give Sun Shield a try!

Key Ingredients:

  • Olive Oil – SPF 3-5, soothes skin
  • Avocado Oil – SPF 15, anti-inflammatory
  • Raspberry Oil – SPF 25-50, phytosterols
  • Mango Butter – SPF 4, rich in vitamin A and antioxidants
  • Comfrey – repairs skin, antioxidant
  • Calendula – antioxidant, anti-inflammatory

ABSOLUTELY NO colors, flavors (natural or artificial), preservatives, added sugar, sodium benzoate, citric acid, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, top allergens (corn, soy, nuts, gluten, dairy, fish) or other junk!

Description

Sun Shield is a sun protectant lotion that provides a completely natural way of safeguarding your skin from sun damage. This lotion doesn’t absorb the sun’s rays or reflect them. Instead, it penetrates deeply into the skin to help protect against damage at the cellular level. Raspberry seed oil protects against UVA and UVB rays, while the oils and butters naturally have SPF ranging from 2 to 50 SPF each.

We use pure, plant-based oils infused with whole organic herbs that are rich in antioxidants. This formula nourishes your skin, blocks free radicals, all while protecting your skin from redness, wrinkles, and damage. Please keep in mind that Sun Shield is not an official sunscreen. Depending on your skin type, you may prefer to pair this with a mineral-based sunscreen for particularly hot or sunny days or you may find it to be enough protection on its own. Looking for an after-sun lotion? Try Sun-Soothe!

FAQs

Q: Is this a replacement for sunscreen? Is it a sunscreen?

A: Sun Shield is not a sunscreen.  Products must contain either a chemical blocker (like oxybenzene) or a physical blocker (like zinc oxide) to legally be considered a sunscreen.  Instead, Sun Shield uses plant oils and herbs that have a natural SPF and protect skin on a cellular level.  Some people use it instead of a traditional sunscreen and some people use it along with a traditional sunscreen.

Q: What is the SPF of Sun Shield?

A: Because it is not legally a sunscreen, it doesn’t have an official SPF rating.  However, based on the SPF of each plant oil in it, we estimate a level of 12 – 15.

Q: This is just a bunch of oils…isn’t that like cooking yourself in the sun?

A: No.  Our skin naturally protects itself with oils!  This will penetrate your skin to protect your skin at a cellular level.  It will not make you ‘cook’ in the sun.

Q: Some of these oils are seed oils! I thought we were never supposed to use those? Won’t they become toxic when exposed to sun?

A: It’s best to avoid seed oils that have been heated to high temperatures, like when frying food, because they do become denatured and potentially toxic then.  However, small amounts of raw, cold-pressed seed oils are fine, especially topically.  The heat level at which these oils become denatured is at least 300 degrees F (which is fairly cool for cooking, but much higher than they would ever get on your skin).  You’re safe here!

Q: Is Sun Shield strong enough for ________?

A: It varies greatly.  Some people who are very fair can use it exclusively in strong sunlight and not burn.  Others may burn even in moderate sunlight.  It depends on genetics, tendency to burn, strength of sun, time of year, and even diet.  A person who consumes an anti-inflammatory diet will be less likely to burn and experience more success with Sun Shield than those who eat more sugar, vegetable oils, and white flour.  (Yes, really!)

Q: What if Sun Shield doesn’t work for me?

A: Like anything else, Sun Shield doesn’t work for 100% of people.  We recommend trying it out during shorter sun exposure first (rather than a long day at the beach).  If it doesn’t work, we have a money-back guarantee — just let us know.

Absolutely love sun shield! Works wonders!

It seems that the face stick works better than the bottle. I used this on myself and my three kids for an outing at the river in the middle of the afternoon in June. UV index was 8 that day. So this was a rigorous testing of the product. It seems to protect skin that has already been exposed to the sun for a few weeks very well. However my son and I have very fair skin and our backs and shoulders got quite the burn. We were out almost two hours. Maybe we needed to reapply. I think next time I would still use this, but then I’d either put on a shirt after an hour or use a mineral sunscreen. Thankfully we also have sun soothe- which is amazing for sun burns!

I try to get 10-15 minutes of sun several times a week to increase my vitamin D levels. I live in FL so this is possible to do year round 🙂 In order to absorb the D properly, you don’t want to put sunscreen on during that time and you want as much of your skin as possible to be exposed. However, I know over time, especially for sensitive areas like my face, its not good to be out in the sun unprotected. Enter Earthley’s sun shield. I started putting this on my face when I go out for that 10-15 minutes. I love the way my face feels. Its not heavy at all. The ingredients in it are good for your skin and I feel much better knowing I’m protecting my face from the harmful UV rays.

I have loved most all of your products… & I wanted to love this one… however this one was a big fail. My daughter used this on her spring break to the beach & was burned very bad! It was more of a sun intensifier! I realize it says “this is not a sunscreen” on the label … however it is sold as a sun protectant & the product is called sun shield… which is pretty contradicting & misleading. Maybe reconsider the labeling to avoid confusion ….& a blistering painful sunburn! It might be better marketed as an after sun moisturizer.

I LOVE Sun Shield! I love that it’s not a thick white cream that takes forever to rub in! I love the ingredients in it! I used it for the first time last summer and it worked great! Unfortunately I missed a spot, and it was there that I burned. I will definitely be using this every summer!

  6. Jadegetzcena (verified owner)

We went all summer without any burns on my super light skinned little boy and myself!!! This stuff is amazing. Plus you don’t get that nasty white pasty look!

  7. Heather (verified owner)

PERFECT FOR JADE ROLLING and Gua Sha; as if this product wasn’t already great if you use this oil on your face in the morning for facial lymphatic massage and drainage techniques it is the perfect viscosity and consistency for both techniques; with the added bonus it will be completely safe to soak into your skin. It’s a fun way to remember to use it daily!

Have found most Earthley products awesome, so thought I would give this a shot. When it arrived, my friend was telling me that he was burning up at work (in construction), so I gave him my Sunscreen and told him try this and let me know. We live in FL and it is hot as a bugger right now. He didn’t like it because it is too oily and it made him feel more hot than if he didn’t have any on. He didn’t get sunburned though, but he was not comfortable in his own skin with the stuff on. I am going to try it next… maybe it’s different on me.

  9. Jade (verified owner)

I LOVE this stuff! It just soaks into the skin. I didn’t like other products because they sat on top and smelled weird and we’re thick and gross feeling. Also the best part is that it actually works! All tan lines on this family, and no burns.

  10. Andrea (verified owner)

I’ve purchased Sun Shield several times and really do like it. My complaints would be the greasiness of the product and that the container can leak. The (more important) positives are that it does work. First time use at the beach I mixed it with a mineral sun screen ‘just incase’. That worked great. Then my one daughter and I tried it on its own with success. She absolutely loved it (and she lives in Florida) and asked for more for Christmas! I have only used it with beach or swimming related events as I fear the oiliness of the product might stain clothing. I am thrilled with this natural option for sun protection.

  11. Jessica S (verified owner)

So far so good! I used this on my daughter last summer while she played at the splash pad. It went on a little greasy, but that was expected. I didn’t think it was any messier than sunblocks we have tried in the past. It seemed to work really well. No sunburn! We are looking forward to trying this again this spring and summer to see how well it works.

  12. Amy!

I like this a lot! it moisturizes as I use it. I think it works to prevent sunburn, but I have not been in the sun enough to test it fully,

  13. Rachel (verified owner)

We love sun shield! I have been looking for a healthy alternative to conventional sun screen and we tried this one for the first time. It goes on smoothly and a little goes a long way, which I love! Good price for a quality product.

I have only used this product twice, so I’m giving it 4 stars because I don’t think I’m completely qualified to give a full review of this product, but I will share how our two uses went. I used it twice last summer toward the end of swimming season and I was a bit nervous about using it in that situation because I was afraid that being in the water would wash it off and not give me a good example of how Sun Shield worked. But both times I was pleasantly surprised. We were not in the sun a very long time, a couple of hours each time, but none of us got sunburned. My daughter and I are very fair-skinned and burn easily but neither one of us did. Based on those two experiences from last summer, I am hopeful that our use of Sun Shield this summer will be as positive.

  15. Ashley (verified owner)

We have been very happy with Sun Shield, although we do need to reapply if outside more than a couple hours or we have noticed a bit of burning. I like that it soaks into our skin and moisturizes instead of sitting on top of it and getting on our clothing.

  16. Shannon H (verified owner)

Worked great for myself and kid. I’m really fair skinned and burn really easily even after just a few minutes in the sun. Over the summer of 2018, my family and I went to Hawaii and I brought the sun shield. I put some on (pretty runny and a little went a long a long way) and spent some time outdoors in the sun. I ended up getting a little pink but later that day it was gone and I may have actually tanned some. My 8 year old daughter had put some on a couple of times but because she kept going swimming it kept coming off. It didn’t work as well for her but I’d say for casual outdoor use it’s great!

I am so happy we found this product! We’re out a lot in the sun and my husband is out daily in it for his job. The first bottle I bought he took for his truck and began using it daily. He said it keeps him from burning and really sooths his skin. Kids and I used it at a play date out in the hot sun for two hours and didn’t get burnt (when we usually do at the beginning of the season). It isn’t water friendly, but works so well and no chemicals!

  18. Jenna (verified owner)

Wouldn’t repurchase. Kind of oily/greasy to me. Hardly used it as I have other brands I prefer to this one.

  19. Margot Muenzing (verified owner)

This is one of my favorite products! I’m a gardener and I spend quite a lot of the day outside in the sun. I apply this and not only is my skin moisturized but I don’t burn…I was a little skeptical when I first tried it but I’ve used it for two summers now and I have fair, dry skin which burns very easily usually. Thank you, Earthley!

  20. Rachel Tripp (verified owner)

It is a little greasy feeling like others have said but I don’t mind most of the time as it’s similar to a tanning oil feel. Works great for us.
