DIY Cinnamon Cough Syrup
When coughs and scratchy throats make an appearance, sometimes the simplest ingredients are all you need. This homemade cinnamon cough syrup combines warming cinnamon, soothing raw honey, and a splash of lemon into an easy remedy you can make right in your kitchen.
Cinnamon has traditionally been used for its warming and comforting properties, while honey can help coat and soothe an irritated throat. Lemon adds a bright flavor and rounds out this simple syrup.
Ingredients:
- ½ cup water
- 1 cinnamon stick (or ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon)
- 1–2 tablespoons raw honey
- Squeeze of fresh lemon juice
Instructions:
- Add the water and cinnamon to a small saucepan.
- Bring to a gentle simmer and allow it to simmer for 10–15 minutes.
- Remove from the heat. If using a cinnamon stick, remove it. If using ground cinnamon, you can strain the mixture if desired.
- Allow the mixture to cool until it is warm, but not hot.
- Stir in the raw honey and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
- Transfer to a clean glass jar and store covered in the refrigerator.
How Much to Use:
Because this recipe contains honey, do not give it to babies under 1 year old.
Ages 1–5: ½ teaspoon as needed
Ages 6–11: 1 teaspoon as needed
Ages 12+: 1–2 teaspoons as needed
Take by the spoonful or stir into a little warm water or caffeine-free tea. Always make sure anything served to young children has cooled to a safe temperature.
How Long Does It Keep?
Since this is a fresh, homemade preparation without preservatives, keep it refrigerated in a clean, sealed container. For best freshness, make small batches and use within about 1 week. Discard it sooner if you notice any change in smell, appearance, or texture.
A Simple Remedy for Cough Season
This DIY is quick, inexpensive, and made with ingredients many families already keep in their kitchens. Whether you're dealing with a dry, tickly throat or simply want something warm and soothing during cold season, cinnamon and honey make an easy combination to keep in your natural wellness toolkit.
Safety Note: Honey is not recommended to a child younger than 12 months due to the risk of infant botulism. Cinnamon should be used in normal culinary amounts, especially for children. If a cough is severe, persistent, accompanied by difficulty breathing, or you're concerned about your child's symptoms, contact a healthcare professional.
