Why Make Your Own Energy Bites?

Store-bought snack bars and energy bites can be convenient, but they can also come with long ingredient lists and ingredients you may not necessarily want.

Making your own gives you control over exactly what goes into them. This recipe starts with just a few pantry staples, and you can easily adjust the texture, sweetness, and add-ins to fit your family.

These energy bites are:

  • Quick and easy to make
  • No-bake
  • Easy to customize
  • Naturally sweetened with honey
  • Great for meal prep
  • Freezer-friendly

DIY Cocoa Calm Energy Bites

Makes: 16–20 bites

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granola, lightly crushed
  • ½ cup natural nut butter (peanut, almond, or cashew)
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 2–4 teaspoons Cocoa Calm, depending on how chocolatey you'd like them
  • ½ cup vanilla or unflavored protein powder, optional
  • ¼ cup mini chocolate chips, optional

Instructions

  1. Lightly crush the granola. Smaller pieces will help the energy bites hold together more easily.
  2. Add the nut butter and honey to a large bowl and stir until smooth and well combined.
  3. Mix in the Cocoa Calm and protein powder, if using.
  4. Fold in the crushed granola and mini chocolate chips.
  5. Check the consistency. If the mixture seems too dry or crumbly, add another teaspoon of honey or nut butter. If it's too sticky, add a little more granola or protein powder.
  6. Scoop out small portions and roll them into approximately 1-inch balls.
  7. Place the bites in the refrigerator for 20–30 minutes to firm up.
  8. Enjoy!

Make Them Your Own

One of the best things about homemade energy bites is how easy they are to customize. Once you have the basic recipe down, try adding some of your family's favorite ingredients.

Optional Add-Ins

  • Chia seeds
  • Ground flaxseed
  • Hemp hearts
  • Unsweetened shredded coconut
  • Chopped walnuts or pecans
  • A pinch of sea salt to bring out the chocolate flavor

You can also experiment with different nut butters or granola varieties to change the flavor and texture.

What If My Energy Bites Won't Stick Together?

Don't worry if your mixture isn't perfect on the first try. Granola, nut butter, honey, and protein powders can all vary quite a bit in consistency.

  • If the mixture is too dry: Add honey or nut butter about 1 teaspoon at a time until it holds together when pressed.
  • If the mixture is too sticky: Add a little extra crushed granola or protein powder until it's easier to roll.

Chilling the mixture for a few minutes before rolling can also help if your nut butter is especially runny.

How to Store Cocoa Calm Energy Bites

Keep your finished energy bites in an airtight container.

Refrigerator: Store for up to 1 week.

FAQs

Can I make these without protein powder?

Yes! The protein powder is completely optional. If you leave it out, you may need to add a little extra granola to get the consistency you prefer.

Can I use any nut butter?

Yes. Peanut, almond, and cashew butter all work well. Because natural nut butters vary in consistency, you may need to slightly adjust the amount of granola or honey.

Can I freeze Cocoa Calm Energy Bites?

Yes. Store them in an airtight, freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.

Can kids help make these?

Absolutely! Crushing the granola, stirring the ingredients, and rolling the mixture into balls are all easy ways to get kids involved in the kitchen. Be mindful of choking hazards from nuts, seeds, or other add-ins when serving younger children.

Can I make these nut-free?

You can try replacing the nut butter with sunflower seed butter or another seed-based spread. The texture may vary slightly, so adjust the granola as needed.
