Herbal Soothing Bath
DIY: Herbal Soothing Bath
Updated on July 20, 2026 There are some days when a hot bath just isn't enough.
Maybe you've been working in the garden all afternoon. Maybe you tried a new workout and now regret every squat. Maybe you're growing a baby, recovering after birth, or simply touched out after chasing little ones all day. Whatever the reason, sometimes your body just asks you to slow down.
That's where herbs come in.
This simple bath blend combines a handful of traditional herbs with Epsom salt for a relaxing soak that's become a favorite in many herbal homes. It smells wonderful, feels luxurious, and only takes a few minutes to mix together.
Not into DIY? We've got you covered there too. Our Herbal Soothing Bath uses many of these same herbs and is ready whenever you need a little extra self-care.
Why These Herbs?
Each herb brings something a little different to the blend.
Comfrey has a long history of topical use to support skin comfort and recovery.
Lavender is loved for its calming scent and is often used to help create a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere.
Chamomile is another gentle favorite that pairs beautifully with lavender for winding down after a long day.
Arnica (optional) is commonly included in topical preparations after strenuous activity.
Calendula (optional) is a classic skin-loving herb that adds extra soothing support.
Plantain (optional) is one of those backyard herbs herbalists never seem to stop talking about…and for good reason. It's traditionally used to support healthy skin.
Herbal Soothing Bath
Ingredients:
(All herbs are dried and measured by weight.)
- 1 part Epsom salt
- 2 parts comfrey root (or leaves)
- 2 parts lavender flowers
- 1 part chamomile flowers
- 1 part arnica (optional)
- 1 part calendula (optional)
1 part dried plantain leaf (optional)
Directions:
Choose how much you'd like to make - using one ounce as each "part" makes a nice starter batch. Mix everything together and store it in an airtight container.
How to Use:
Fill a muslin bag with about ¼–½ cup of the blend, tie it closed, and toss it into a warm bath.
Trust us on the muslin bag. Cleaning loose herbs out of the tub isn't nearly as relaxing as the bath itself.
Prefer not to have herbs floating in the water? Steep ½–1 cup of the mixture in about 4 cups of boiling water for 20–30 minutes, strain, and pour the herbal "tea" into your bath instead.
More Than Just a Bath:
This blend is surprisingly versatile.
Many moms enjoy using the cooled herbal tea as part of a postpartum sitz bath or soaking reusable cloth pads before chilling them for a comforting compress. You can also use the tea to make warm compresses anytime your skin could use a little extra TLC.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave out some of the herbs? Absolutely. The base recipe of Epsom salt, comfrey, lavender, and chamomile works beautifully on its own. How long will it keep? Stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, it'll stay fresh for about a year. Can kids use it? Generally, yes. Just consider your child's age and any sensitivities they may have, and remember that arnica is intended for external use only. Why use a muslin bag? Because unclogging herbs from the drain isn't nearly as fun as soaking in them.
